"Mulberry Street" had Joseph doing some Elton John-style piano bounce before he led the crowd in an audience-divided call and response, a sublime moment he said Saturday he had been dreaming about.Īnd there was the soaring "Shy Away," with Joseph, one of the first in a brave new wave of pop artists openly singing about their anxieties, empowering fans to "leave their skin on the floor," giving the song live its own makeover with a striking transition into a bombastic take of My Chemical Romance's "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)."Īnd "Scaled and Icy" offered an opportunity to show off some new theatrics. I saw them at Lollapalooza 2015, where a sea of fans were jumping so wildly, the earth underneath my feet literally moved.īut this show Saturday was, I have no doubt, the greatest show of their lives.įor starters, there's a strong new album, "Scaled and Icy," that allowed a duo that became famous for defying categorization and splicing together genres to explore more new terrain.
